Banished! — 5: Divided, We Fail
Carson Edwards also waited in his own quarters for the meeting with the Captain. He wasn’t so eager to participate. In his training, he excelled but it was more due to his quickness in quietly grasping technical subjects than because of any showboating for an instructor. He especially didn’t care for the politics that what the Captain wanted his help with would necessarily involve.
Still, he had always tried to do his best at any task assigned him by superiors. Perhaps he could spend most of his time in the process listening, and just suggest some of the obvious things. For sure, he would seek to escape controversy. Actually, he had a knack for sorting out branches of logic into the correct bins. The first few years out of school, he had been a programmer analyst, so was familiar with top-down design that provided the quickest solution to complex problems.
Finally he decided that, even though he felt the pressure of being manipulated into volunteering — he couldn’t just say No! to his commanding officer, could he? — that he would do his best to offer whatever assistance he felt required to provide.
On his personal electronic device, Carson jotted down the major categories. Would there be a “local” government on board each ship, with a “World” government that ruled over all? Perhaps locally, there could be the equivalent of a ship manager…
