Banished! — 6: Captain’s Meeting

Carson and Jada converged on the Captain’s quarters from opposite ends of the hallway at the same time. They smiled at each other for their punctuality, and Carson tapped twice lightly on the door.

“Come in,” Matt called to them. Jada opened the door and went in first, with Carson just behind. The Captain was in his leather chair behind a small metal desk. “Sit.” He motioned to the plain chairs across from his desk, and the two officers took their seats.

Matt hesitated, then told them the news about the message from the Abdallah’s Captain that they would not be joining the highest level of government, preferring to go it alone. The two officers appeared stunned.

“Sir,” Jada said, “Will the Balboa still be joining with us, or will it be each ship for itself?”

“I haven’t spoken with them yet. I thought I would call them with you two able to listen in.” They nodded their acceptance and Matt went on. “I’m sorry that the Abdallah is opting out. It’s a big mistake. We all need each other’s help. By excluding a third of the colonists from the new government, they will be affecting the lives and fortunes of us all.”

Carson held his hand up to speak. Matt shook his head at him and motioned for him to speak openly.
