“Vic?” Bobby’s trembly voice echoed in the pitch dark of the cave.

“Right beside you.” Vic reached out his hand and touched Bobby’s shoulder. They sat side by side on rock.

Their lone flashlight completely faded soon after they left the tunnel and entered a large chamber. The entire space had been packed with the strange creatures. The two boys had been herded into a bowl-like depression in one corner of the cavern room.

Since then, they’d been left alone.

At least, that’s the way it seemed to Vic. They’d been unmolested, which made no sense. One look at those needle teeth left no doubt that these creatures were meat eaters.

Is that what happened to Sonny? Vic thought it likely, and he was sure it was only a matter of time until he and Bobby became dinner.

Why the delay? Were these animals arguing over the spoils? Their capture set off a cacophony of ecstatic squealing. The high-pitched noise in the crowded chamber had hurt his ears. Of course, that beat being gobbled on the spot.

“What do we do now?” Bobby’s thin reedy voice sounded on the edge of hysteria.

“Be quiet,” Vic whispered. He sure didn’t want to do anything to draw the creatures’ attentions back to them. His stomach growled with hunger, and his throat was…
