Beastly Winter — Chapter 25
Will pulled up in front of the station and looked around. His was the only vehicle. Unusual. He pushed open his door, surprised at how difficult it was to hold it open against the force of the still-raging storm. He left his Stetson on the seat beside him, rather than fight with keeping it on his head.
The snow was piling up knee-high already on the sidewalk. The path before him was clear of footprints. He was the first to arrive this morning. He couldn’t remember that happening in a very long time.
He entered and looked into Lily’s small office. Empty. Dale would probably be out on patrol, even in this weather. There would be stranded motorists who would appreciate his help. Zellner was probably still in bed. He came and went at his own pleasure. Will decided he needed to do something about that.
He heard a noise from the back where the cells were, behind a closed door to cut down on the racket that prisoners made. Will walked over and leaned in.
Lance’s hands gripped the bars as he stared at Will. “Where’s breakfast, Sheriff?”
Lily usually stopped on her way in to pick up meals for prisoners. Right now, Lance was the sole occupant.
“Just hold on. It shouldn’t be long.” Hopefully, Lily’s car would start and she could maneuver the tricky roadways from her remote house…
