Although Johnny no longer attended classes, he sat in his old homeroom at his desk. He lived in the schoolhouse now, along with a dozen other survivors. The electricity was still on, providing lights and heat. Along with safety from the packs of dogs that roamed the streets in search of anything to appease their growing hunger. Johnny had seen them take down one old man on the sidewalk. One such spectacle convinced everyone else to stay indoors.

There was a bus parked a hundred yards from a side door. One man might make it. Sets of keys in the office were labeled and hung on pegs inside a hanging metal box. Why leave? To go where? The school cafeteria had been well-stocked and should last them a good while.

He might go to the gym later to play some one-on-one with Jaimie. There sure weren’t enough kids to do much else.

The electricity had finally shut off. The food supply was dwindling. Johnny sat in his old homeroom at the schoolhouse where he’d once attended classes.

The other kids were down at the basketball court. Johnny had decided to avoid them as much as possible. He could sense the ferocity that was building in them all. The pushing and shoving was devolving into kicks and punches. He was certain that it was only a matter of when before it would accelerate into greater violence.
