Jason stared out the large picture window of the old bungalow at the ship riding the waves between himself and the horizon. There was a long pier that he’d walked to the end, staring at the boat, the size of a smallish yacht. On its deck, several bodies lay in unchanging positions that appeared impossible to attain.
Jason had watched a long time, but none moved. He was sure they were dead, and no one else ever emerged from the topside cabin. The boat was evidently anchored securely so that it never floated away nor was driven to shore.
Jason wasn’t the world’s best swimmer. He’d never be able to make it out that far. He’d drown trying. However, he’d seen surfboards standing at what once had been a beachfront rental business a few hundred yards from his bungalow. Could he lie down on one of those and paddle out to the boat, or would the incoming waves be too much to overcome?
He’d seen movies in which beach bums did that without much effort. It was possible he could manage. He’d need to rig a method to stay attached to the board, even when the waves tossed him away.
