Kevin sat on a log beside Eva at the campfire after her parents had gone to bed within the large tent in which they all slept together.

“So what’s up with the meat,” Kevin said. “All of you look at me strangely whenever I’m eating.”

“You don’t want to know.”

“Yes, I do.”

“My father goes out and hunts it, but they’re not animal parts. I try not to eat it, but sometimes I’m just too hungry.”

“So, you mean…”

Eva nodded her head. “Yes, that’s what I mean.”

Kevin thought he’d get sick, but he didn’t. I don’t really believe her. It’s not possible. Just a family joke, and she’s putting one over on him? She’s not laughing, though.

“He’s a mean bastard,” she hissed softly. Eva was watching him after her harsh statement. For his reaction? “I’m going to try to get away, when the time’s right.”

“Why? He’s your father, right?”

“I guess, but he sure don’t act like it. That’s why I’m out here most nights. I wait for him to start snoring.”

“You think he’ll try to abuse you?”
