Remnants — Episode 27
“You ain’t going nowhere, girl,” Dunstan told Eva. He raised the blade to shoulder-high. “And you better get out now,” he told Kevin, “while you still can.”
Kevin and Eva sat beside one another as they ate breakfast. Eva’s father was sitting opposite them on the other side of the fire, but Mrs. Dunstan was still in the tent.
Kevin moved the meat around on his plate, examining it. He gradually recognized what he was looking at. It was a human hand, without fingers.
Raul Dunstan hungrily consumed his meal. He had been scowling at their togetherness, but now saw Kevin looking at what was on his plate and smirked.
“Eat up, boy. It’ll get you through the day.”
Kevin looked at him then tossed his food into the fire.
“Son of a bitch!” Mr. Dunstan exclaimed. “What’d you do that for?” He resumed scowling at the two in front of him. They sat stiffly beneath his gaze.
“I know what that is you fed me.”
Mr. Dunstan gave Eva a hard stare. He knew she’d told Kevin already, thus spoiling the fun of Kevin’s discovery.
