Sitting up on the bench as sunrise struck his eyes, Yancey cradled the walkie-talkie in the crook of his left arm, wondering what electronics store she’d found them at. As far as he knew, they’d pretty much been obsolete for years.
What was their battery life? He twisted the knob to the on position. He had turned it off at night before going to sleep to conserve its power.
It had been several days since the girl had spoken to him on what was sure to be an identical radio. Would he hear from her again? What had she meant that she would have to chance communicating with him? What was it she said she needed to show him? Big trouble? And what area did she need to re-check?
She hadn’t returned to the box, so he had been using it for shelter himself. This last night, though, he awakened several times to some sort of noise just outside. Animals? Rats, or dogs? Or maybe, someone, perhaps the girl. Perhaps not. In any case, he had abandoned the box and slept on the bench so he could watch around him. Such as he could in the near-darkness without electric lights. Pretty spooky.
