Jessie led Yancey into the park. Near the auditorium, the grass was covered in wet globules, and the low note of deep breathing filled the air.
Yancey was stunned. What is this? What’s happening here?

“But what are they?”
“I don’t know yet?” She said. “I don’t think they’ve hatched yet.”
“Hatched?”
“They’re eggs,” she said. “At least, I believe that’s what they are, anyway.”
“But what are they going to hatch into?” He turns to look at her. Pretty girl, maybe seventeen. He was afraid he was going to need her help here. She obviously understood more than he did.
“Don’t know, but I don’t believe it will be much longer.”
“Why’s that?”
“Their breathing rate has quickened and gotten deeper. It sounds like anticipation to me, as if they are expecting something to happen soon. That’s what it feels like to me, anyway.”
