“Ed, you keeping a bomb in here?”

“Bomb? No, Frank.”

“I didn’t think so.” Lanier rubbed his grizzled chin. “So what are you doing here.”

“Sheriff, you wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

“That right? So try me.”

Ed dropped his gaze and thought about it. What the hell. Why not?

“Then watch this.”

He turned, walked toward the wall, then passed right through it.

“Ed!” bellowed the sheriff.

Ed reappeared as the Sheriff headed for the door. Ed supposed he meant to look for him. The lawman’s jaw hung open as he gaped at Ed.

“What the hell did you just do?”

“Exactly what you think I did, Frank.”

How? I don’t believe you.”

“Want to see it again?”

“Hell no!” The Sheriff looked at him strangely, studying him as if he were considering a perhaps venomous snake in his path. “Just tell me how you done that.”

“It’s a long story, Sheriff.”

“I’m listening.”

“Well, I found something at the pit.” Ed remembered the missing piece on the machine and now realized what had become of it. “I think both me and Dave…
