Schizogenesis [chapter 27]
Sheriff Lanier heard dispatch announce the 9–1–1 and listened as one of his deputies took the call. The heavy rainfall reduced visibility as he pointed his car toward the given address. A half-mile from the location, he caught up to the deputy’s car and fell in behind. They left their lights on but killed the sirens.
Frank saw the communication van parked a little way down from the call address and realized who it was. Was there a raid in progress? He flashed his headlights and pulled in front of the deputy.
Their emergency lights continued to rotate as they got out of their vehicles. Frank spoke in a low voice.
“Follow me. Let’s see what we got first.” They walked through the downpour up on the porch of the woodframe house and peered inside through the open door. Frank tapped on the door jamb.
Turning his head in their direction, Blender showed surprise to see him.
“Well, Sheriff Lanier. Come in.” Blender looked at his agents, who separated to three corners of the room.
Frank motioned for his man to remain on the porch. The deputy stood near the door so he could view the entire room.
“Mr. Blender,” he nodded as he entered. He took in Tina Trask and saw the two boys standing in the hall doorway. Who lived here?
