Schizogenesis [chapter 4]
Ed’s barn was filled with his treasures. Some were from his childhood. He’d began collecting at an early age. Many were from the city dump, where he’d learned to drive a front-end loader. The past ten years, he worked at Red River Trucking.
Whatever he’d just found must be something valuable for the government to get so hot and bothered about. If he couldn’t work a deal, maybe he’d just keep it.
He walked through the maze of items in the barn to the center where he’d placed his new find. He was surprised to see that it had become shorter. No, it had sunken into the earth. How could that be?
Reaching down, he tugged on it. It began to glow and rise from the ground.
“Shit!” he exclaimed and turned loose. As he stepped back, the object began to settle back down again. The glow slowly subsided. He checked his hand. Everything seemed okay and he felt no pain. He’d expected to be burned.
Actually, he felt fine.
He stepped closer and reached out, lifted the object again. It rose again. When it reached its full height, Ed turned loose. This time it remained. He noticed that his arm was glowing. It was just like when he’d been in the truck running from the government men.
Damn. What had he found? And what had he done to himself? Or rather, what had it done…
