Restless, Ming went downstairs to check on Mia, who was sleeping soundly. Ming couldn’t get the uneasy feeling out of her mind. She was afraid she’d made a terrible mistake in trusting Blender.

In the living room, she sat upon the couch and began to wring her hands as she chewed her lower lip. Reaching over, she turned on the lamp and drew her purse to her.

She’d kept in touch with the professor through a phone number she kept in code on what appeared to be a grocery list. The last time she’d seen him in person was when he came to the Johnsons thirteen years ago to perform Mia’s home-birthed delivery. There had been complications, and they couldn’t risk some other doctor’s involvement, since they were unsure themselves what to expect.

Ming pulled her cell phone from her purse and dialed the number.

“Hello,” the familiar voice said.

“Oh, Professor Kirland, I am so sorry to have to disturb you.”

“It’s okay, my dear. Is something wrong with Mia?”

“No, she’s fine, but so much has happened. Someone accidentally found the machine, and now the government has it!”

“Oh, dear. That does cause a problem.”

Mia sat with the phone pressed to her ear as the silence lengthened.
