“Whoa,” he said. He took a step inside so she could also look, then stopped again, flashlight aimed against the back wall.

“We need to look around and see what’s been making that racket. It sounds like it is coming from somewhere further back,” Gavin said.

Melanie handed the flashlight to him. Her hands trembled and were colder than they should be. She was more than glad to surrender control of this situation to him. She’d never experienced anything like this, and really would prefer not to be doing so this time.

“Shouldn’t we wait until in the morning, when we can see better?”

“Can you sleep above it another night,” Gavin asked, “without knowing what’s here?”

Melanie knew he was right, but maybe she didn’t really want to know what was doing all this stuff.

“Yeah, you’re right. I could maybe go to my Dad’s house.” Was she really up tonight for his certain ‘I told you so’? Not really.

“You could spend the night at my place, if you want. I actually think, though, that right now is our best time to get this over with.”

He was right, she decided.
