She opened her mouth to tell him that she was in possession of the watch, then hesitated. Was he in trouble, too? Were the shadow people there in his home, also?

Melanie heard his phone ringing as she held hers near her ear.

“Hi, Melanie.”

“Dad! Are you okay?”

“What? Of course I’m okay. Are you? What’s up?”

“Are you wearing your watch?”

“My watch? Yes,” he said. “No. I just took a shower. I left it on the bedroom table. Why do you want to know if I’m wearing my watch?”

“Go get it,” she said.

“Get it. What?”

“Just do it,” she said.

“Okay, okay. Just a minute.”

She heard the sounds of his movements.

“Well. I thought I left it here,” he said. “I guess it’s in the bathroom.”

“Look,” she said, knowing it wouldn’t be there, either. She looked at the watch in her hand.

After several minutes in which she knew he would be going into the restroom then out to check in the living room, his voice returned.
