The Gnashing — 7: The Expanding Mystery

The next morning, Melanie dressed for work. She felt tired; the gnashing had gone on almost all night. When she did get to sleep a few times, she’d awakened to the sight of shifting shadows, like someone moving around the room in the dark. She didn’t turn on the light, knowing that it would be the shadow people again.

Her phone rang. She looked at the caller name before she answered, and was surprised.

“Hello, Daddy. What’s going on?”

“Nothing, honey. I just wanted to let you know that I found my watch.”

“Really.” She’d left it on the coffee table in the living room. She walked toward it. “You mean you have it now?” It couldn’t be.

“Sure. I’m wearing it.”

Except for her medical texts, the table was empty.

“Where was it?” she asked. The shadow people!

“It was on the floor, right next to where I left it.” His tone was the old I told you so that he used so often. “It must have fallen off.”

Did the shadow people have some sort of poltergeist ability, moving things around to scare people? If so, they also knew things about her…
