Gavin and Melanie walked downstairs and stepped out into the dark. She followed behind as he returned to his truck. He opened the door, bent inside, and rummaged in a large console for the flashlight. He turned back to her, pointed the object he held to the ground, and switched it on. Its bright beam was intensely white.

Melanie was happy to see that it wasn’t some dim light. This was going to be spooky, no matter what, but at least they would be able to see anything that confronted them.

They walked back to the house, stepped onto the wood-slatted front porch, and looked in through the plate window. It was dark inside. Cupping their palms around their eyes, both pressed their faces against the glass. They could see nothing inside, but the dark was so intense that anything could be there. Gavin placed the flashlight against the picture window and aimed the white light inside. As they watched, he tilted it at angles to illuminate all of the lower apartment’s living room.

Gavin shut off the light, then turned and walked to the front door. Melanie watched him twist the knob. It was of course locked. To be otherwise would make it almost a sure thing that someone would be inside, watching and listening…
